He Won't Return

By DOC

Three Brothers riding, one packing his old lady, came across a familiar sight along Ohio's country roads; a field drainage culvert going under the highway. It was deep enough to justify the guardrails on both sides of the road. I don't know what possessed the cager heading in the opposite direction to pass the car in front of him but he did; right there just before the 'bridge'. My Bros didn't have anywhere to go, the cager didn't slow down, and the head-on killed all the Brothers on impact. Judy was thrown off into the adjacent field where she lay undiscovered for nearly two hours. Her injuries were extensive; a severed leg, crushed chest, broken leg, broken arms, fascial disfiguration, fractured skull, crushed jawbone, and other injuries too numerous to mention. She made it through all the surgery in good shape but the emotional scars lasted for years and most likely aren't completely healed. This song I wrote for her, Bugs, Reo, and Sidewinder.....

She sits alone by the fireside.
The night is oh so cold.
She sees his face in the firelight.
The wind outside softly moans,
"he won't return, he won't return".

She'll close her eyes just before the dawn.
Salty tears dry streaked across her face.
The dream returns and lingers on.
He's a memory nothing can erase.
But "he won't return, no he won't return".

Morning shows itself a new day.
She tries so hard to make things right.
But stumbles through in the same old way;
being ever conscious of his ride.
Always conscious of the ride.

She shares her coffee with the morning radio.
It plays a song he once called their own.
She whispers softly, "Lord, I just don't know,
if I can find another reason to come home.
Since, "he won't return, no he won't return"

Force of habit makes her call good bye
as she closes the door,
hangs her head and quietly walks away.
It's all too clear she's been here before
and God, she has to find some meaning to her day.
Cause, "he won't return, no he won't return"

Morning shows itself a new day.
She tries so hard to make things right.
But stumbles through in the same old way;
being ever conscious of his ride.
Always conscious of the ride.
Forever conscious of that night.
