Adjusting Hydraulic Lifters
This is really a piece of cake if you follow instructions.
1. Remove both plugs from your engine
2. Turn engine over slowly by hand using a wrench on the compensator nut or leave the scoot in gear and turn the rear wheel. [Easier with rear jacked up of course and a friend to help you back there].
3. With your finger over the plug hole on the rear cylinder turn the engine. When you feel air pressure from the rear piston coming up on TDC, the *front* cylinder will be on the heel of the cam, pretty much at it's lowest point.
4. Adjust the pushrods until there isn't any slack left then go 4 additional turns.
5. Lock them down and repeat the above for the rear cylinder, this time with your finger over the front plug hole.
**Note**If you shave down one of your wrenchs you'll find it easier to fit.
Too simple some pointed out so for those that haven't done it or it's been awhile here are the detailed instructions.
First the engine must be cold! Get your pushrods at their lowest position by following the instructions above [#2 and #3].
If the lifter is under oil supply conditions, hasn't been removed from engine and cleaned use the following procedure:
With tappet in its lowest postion, loosen the locknut and turn adjusting screw upward, shortening the push rod, until push rod has some shake in it. keep push rod from turning by holding wrrench on flats at base of push rod. [Now is the time you may want to shave one of your wrenches down for fit]. Slowly turn adjusting screw downward lengthening the rod until all the slack has been taken out. Mark the adjusting screw with chalk and turn it down exactly four full turns. Lock adjustment by tightening locknut to 10 ft-lbs. Be sure to allow the lifter to bleed down before turning your engine over to adjust the next tappet. They will usually bleed down in 5 to 10 minutes.
Turning your engine over before the lifter has bleed down may cause valve interference resulting in damaged push rods or valves. Take this to the bank, I've done it and it cost me not only time but bucks as well.
If lifter is dry, meaning clean and free of oil set tappet at lowest point as stated above before inserting the lifter.
Install push rod and turn adjusting screw downward until lifter piston bottoms in its bore. Turn adjusting screw upward exactly 1-3/4 turns. Lock adjustment by tightening locknut to 10 ft-lbs. When using this method bleed down is not required before proceeding to the next tappet.
Turn engine over until the next tappet is at its lowest point before inserting next dry lifter. Adjust push rod length as you did before. Continue in this manner until all tappets are adjusted. Make sure lifters are clean and dry before adjusting push rod length.
Install push rod comver spring cap retainers.
Use new push rod cover gaskets at all joints cleaning gasket surfaces with greaseless solvent. Greasy gaskets or surfaces will cause gaskets to adhere to joint surfaces and become difficult later down the road.
